Ten years ago, painter Frank De Mulder, not to be confused with the photographer of the same name, moved from Antwerp to Vremde. His greatest motivation? The old slaughterhouse and its barn behind the house. From there, he and his son Joris work on their artwork. The studio at Broechemsesteenweg 131 was aptly named "Oud Slachterytje" (Old Slaughterhouse).
In the studio, elements of the old slaughterhouse "Het Vleesfabriekske" are still clearly visible. The characteristic white tiles, old blood channels, meat hooks and machines create a unique environment. Now, however, it's filled with paint, brushes, easels, frames, clippings, and jute bags.
Frank's style in his (collage) works is immediately apparent. From a distance, you gaze at beautiful impressionistic street scenes, café interiors, and harbor views. But as you get closer, you quickly notice the raw materials like jute sacks, rope, cardboard, and metal incorporated into them. A roughness that, to a certain extent, beautifully complements the setting of an old slaughterhouse.
