Frans van Bommel became known for his 'social actions' in public spaces. Together with local residents, he worked on murals with the aim of brightening up deprived neighbourhoods. For example, in the early seventies he carried out 'colour projects' on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam, which at the time was a construction site due to the construction of a metro line. He then made colourful murals in the Dapperbuurt and Crooswijk in Rotterdam. He also made various commissioned works, such as a mural for the prison in Scheveningen and polyester reliefs for the Ministry of Social Affairs. In 1995, Van Bommel stopped working on commissions and concentrated on autonomous work, in which water played the leading role. He travelled by boat from Amsterdam to France for two months a year. On the way, he sketched the quays, the canals and the landscape. His style was abstract, but he himself called these drawings and paintings fiercely realistic. He was a Crown Member of the Council for the Arts and an advisor to the Government Buildings Agency.
