- Ger Meinema was born in Kubaard, Friesland in 1939 and trained at the Tilburg Academy and the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. He had his first exhibition in the gallery “De Sphinx” in 1969 in Amsterdam. In the 1970s he worked in a surrealist style with themes of men and women with grinning, contorted heads in bizarre interiors. They symbolized the hopeless isolation of people thrown back on themselves, longing for but unable to make contact. Work in important foreign museum collections such as the Thysen (now located in Madrid). In the 1980s he retired to Greece for extended periods and mainly painted landscapes. From the 1990s, in a third period, he returns to the human figure with images that evoke associations in a more undefined way. Ger Meinema has been exhibiting regularly at Art Singel 100 since 1990.
