Bennink was born in Zaandam, the son of a classical drummer. He played drums and clarinet from a young age. In the 1960s, he played drums with several American artists visiting the Netherlands, such as Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and Eric Dolphy (he can be heard on Dolphy's final studio album, 1964's Last Date). In the following years, Bennink developed into a distinctive personality in the emerging free jazz and improvised music scene.
In 1963, Bennink formed a quartet with pianist Misha Mengelberg and saxophonist Piet Noordijk. They collaborated with various bassists and played at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1966. In 1967, he, along with Misha Mengelberg and Willem Breuker, co-founded the Instant Composers Pool (ICP), which promoted Dutch avant-garde music. It is a medium-sized group consisting of musicians who occasionally play together.
From the late 1960s, Han Bennink played in a trio with saxophonist Peter Brötzmann and Belgian pianist Fred Van Hove. After Van Hove's departure in 1976, they continued as a duo. For much of the 1990s, Bennink played in Clusone 3 (also known as the Clusone Trio). This was a trio with saxophonist and clarinetist Michael Moore and cellist Ernst Reijseger. Another trio featured Ray Anderson and Christy Doran. Bennink regularly performs with Misha Mengelberg and improvises extensively with other musicians.
Besides these long-term collaborations, Bennink has also worked on several solo projects (performances and albums). For example, 1982's Tempo Comodo, a solo album on which he collaborates with numerous improvised music and free jazz luminaries such as Derek Bailey, Eugene Chadbourne, Conny Bauer, Don Cherry, and Alexander von Schlippenbach, as well as more conventionally playing artists like Lee Konitz.
Bennink drums in various styles, ranging from conventional jazz to free and highly idiosyncratic improvisations. He uses anything he can find on stage as a percussion instrument (chairs, music stands, instrument cases), including his own body (for example, a drumstick in his mouth, which he plays with another; he also often wraps his (mountain) boots around the snare drum). Bennink utilizes the entire stage and the surrounding space (floors, doors, and walls). He also frequently uses bird whistles and other instruments that spark his imagination.
During a particularly spectacular performance in Toronto in the 1990s, Bennink placed a wailing siren on stage. Han Bennink is a talented multi-instrumentalist, and there's a recording of him playing clarinet, violin, and piano. Han Bennink is the brother of saxophonist Peter Bennink.
He performed with the punk band The Ex. A trained graphic artist, Bennink designed many of his CD booklets himself. His website shows that in addition to drawings, he also creates sculptural objects, which seem to be in the Fluxus tradition.
