Hannes Postma verwierf in de jaren zestig internationale bekendheid met series grote kleuretsen. Tussen 1970 en 1978 maakte hij zijn ‘zeeschilderijen’. Dit leidde in 1973 tot de Hoek van Hollandse School. Met enkele oud leerlingen van de Rotterdamse academie vormde hij een anarchistische kunstgroepje, dat tot doel had elke invloed van buiten (docenten, tradities) uit te sluiten. Na verloop van tijd ging iedereen weer zijn eigen weg en Hannes Postma zocht aansluiting bij de Nieuwe Figuratie.
Opvallende overeenkomsten in het werk van schilders die tot de Nieuwe Figuratie worden gerekend zijn: de combinatie van figuratieve en abstracte elementen, een spanning tussen het platte vlak en de illusie van ruimte, fel kleurgebruik, scherpe contouren en popart elementen.
Hannes Postma volgde een opleiding op de Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. Gedurende de periode 1971-1988 was hij docent op de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam.
