About the artist
Johannes Paulus Franciscus (Hans) Truijen (13 February 1928 in Surabaya – 9 July 2005 in Klimmen) was a Dutch painter and stained glass artist. He was educated at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, where he was taught by Jos ten Horn and Thé Lau and graduated cum laude in 1955. He received the Royal Subsidy for Free Painting that year.
Truijen made paintings, mosaics, murals and stained glass windows. The windows he made for the Sint-Martinuskerk in Wyck (Maastricht) between 1966 and 1968 were both praised and criticised. They are sometimes called 'pop art windows'. He connected old and new by applying photos to the glass using the screen printing method and creating collages, as it were. In this way he brought together the suffering of Christ with the current events of the Vietnam War and the meeting of Pope Paul VI and the Orthodox Patriarch Athenagoras I with the resurrection of Christ. In 1971 he made a large pop art window for the Savelbergklooster in Heerlen. For the stations in Heerlen and Voerendaal he made windows in the eighties with a composition of elements related to travel. Truijen had his windows made at the Flos studio in Steyl, the Hubert Felix studio in Maastricht and the Joëlle d'Alsace studio in Lanaken.
A striking example of his painting is the St. Catherine Chapel in Oud-Lemiers, a Romanesque hall church, the walls and ceiling of which he painted in 1978. Truijen was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1979 for his contribution to Dutch painting.
