Hendrik Kranenburg (1917-1997) lived and worked in Amsterdam before settling in Laren in 1943. He studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam (1938-1942) under the direction of J.H. Jurres and W.H. van de Berg. He received a prize for portrait painting and a grant from the Davidsfonds (Arti en Amicitiae in Amsterdam). Kranenburg drew (pen and pastel), etched, and lithographed. He is best known for his oil paintings. They were usually expansive, monumental landscapes with a rich color palette. The paint was applied thickly to the canvas with coarse penstrokes, often creating a more than one-dimensional impression. His style was reminiscent of the painter W.G.F. Jansen, whom he greatly admired.
