About the artist: Hendrik van Kempen (1892-1958) was born as the son of a house painter in Kamerik. He draws and paints at a young age. He is studying drawing at night school. There he is taught by Willem Gestel, among others. In 1914 he starts as a teacher at the evening drawing school in Woerden and in 1919 he becomes a teacher at the Woerdense HBS. In 1922 he succeeds his old teacher Willem Gestel as director of the evening drawing school. Hendrik van Kempen dies in 1958 just before the opening of an exhibition of his work in the City Museum of Woerden.
