- An oil on oak panel painting by Hendrik IJkelenstam, painted in the 1960s. A beautiful impressionist depiction of a farm on a moonlit night. Signed and titled by the artist on both the front and back of the panel. Both the painting and the original wooden frame are in (very) good condition.
Hendrikus IJkelenstam (1897-1993) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, graphic artist and sculptor.
Education: From 1913 to 1916, IJkelenstam studied at the National School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam. He also took evening courses at the National Academy of Fine Arts from 1915 to 1916, and completed his full-time studies there from 1916 to 1920.
After completing his art studies, IJkelenstam, who often signed his work with "Ykelenstam," settled in Amsterdam in 1925. He created graphic works and oil paintings of cityscapes, still lifes, and portraits in a naturalistic style, gaining fame primarily for his portraits and atmospheric cityscapes of Amsterdam. In 1929, IJkelenstam traveled abroad to France, a destination he has visited regularly ever since. He also traveled only twice to Madrid, Toledo, and the surrounding area. He visited Florence, Rome, and other Italian cities in 1955, 1958, and 1959. IJkelenstam was a member of several artists' associations, including Arti et Amicitiae and De Onafhankelijken, and from 1951 onward taught drawing at the Municipal Secondary School for girls in Amsterdam.
IJkelenstam received several awards; he was twice honored with the St. Luke Award, in 1925 and 1928. In 1919, he received the Willink van Collen Prize from Arti et Amicitiae.
