Etching by Hendrikus Roodenburg. Title: "Waalhaven Rotterdam Signed and dated in the lower right corner of the print. Bottom right, signed in pencil by the artist. Dimensions frame: H 49 x W 77 cm. Dimensions of the presentation H 32 x W 60 cm. Condition: in good condition. Numbered 61 lower left. Lived and worked in The Hague and Northern Italy and after 1925 in Wassenaar. He was taught by the etcher Ch. Zilcken and further formed himself. His oeuvre often includes paintings and drawings of landscapes and still lifes in a naturalistic style. Roodenburg was a member of the societies 'Arti et Amicitiae' and 'St-Lucas' in Amsterdam and 'Pulchri Studio' in The Hague. The stylish painting 'Flowers in a Pewter Vase' shows many similarities with the work of the well-known still life painter J. Bogaerts. Roodenburg worked a lot with the art trade throughout his life. His teacher Ph. Zilcken introduced him as early as 1913 to the Schüller art dealership in The Hague on the Plein in The Hague. Amsterdam had his attention early on, so that in 1916 the art dealers Buffa in the Kalverstraat and Caramelli & Tessaro in the Spui followed. Since the early 1920s, Roodenburg has supplied at least twenty art dealers throughout the Netherlands. Much later, in the late 1970s, he sold hundreds of color etchings in California through trade contacts. Roodenburg made topographical etchings of the region or city in question for his "clientele" all over the Netherlands. Over the years, Roodenburg preferred to print his recent work, rather than the old one. At the end of the seventies, this changed: there was a demand from collectors of topographical work for etchings of disappeared cityscapes and heavily changed landscapes. In 1997, after compiling his oeuvre catalog, his daughter decided to transfer the entire collection of graphics, including documentation, drawings and sketches, to the Museum Commanderij van Sint-Jan in Nijmegen. Roodenburg's catalog raisonné is still for sale at the modern antiquarian bookshop.
