Henk Bellaard begon zijn werkzaamheden als decoratie schilder voor bedrijven. Zo maakte hij decoraties voor de firma R.R. Bruijnen te Rotterdam, vervaardigde tekeningen voor de Caran d'Ache fabrieken te Genéve en ontwierp toeristische prenten van Holland voor Damall in Texas (VS) en Ken Ross te Alberta (Canada). In 1939 verzorgde hij, in samenwerking met enige andere schilders, de decoraties voor de optocht ter gelegenheid van het honderdjarig bestaan van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen. Voor de Philips-fabrieken te Eindhoven maakte hij een diorama. Daarnaast werkte hij voor de Koninklijke Fabriek Inventum, het reclamebureau Hypsos en de firma Abee.
Henk Bellaard werd in 1947 benoemd tot leraar aan de Vrije Academie Artibus, maar was al sinds 14 april 1943 als leraar werkzaam bij het Stichts Genootschap Artibus. Hij was ondermeer leraar van Frans Ruwel, Rien Goené en vele tijdgenoten.
