Hendrik Johan Melgers was born in Groningen in 1899. In 1916 he became a student at the Minerva Academy. In 1920 Melgers left for Amsterdam where he married in 1921. In 1925 he moved back to Grongingen and joined 'De Ploeg' as a working member. Due to his precarious financial situation, he did not participate in all 'Ploeg' exhibitions. From 1939 he lived and worked in Amsterdam again. Melgers' work is clearly influenced by Vincent van Gogh. His paintings are usually made up of a large number of colored stripes next to each other. Farm life, animals and landscapes are the most common themes. An important part of Melger's oeuvre are his woodcuts.
