Petitjean (1854-1929) initially worked as a decorative painter. In 1872 he went to study at the art academy in Paris. He was a student of Alexandre Cabanel and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. He made his debut at the Paris salon in 1880 and met Georges Seurat in 1884, with whom he became friends. From about 1890 he focused on pointillism. In 1891 he exhibited at the Société des Artistes Indépendants and in 1893 at Les XX and La Libre Esthétique. He mainly produced work with mythological subjects and scenes with bathers.
