Jan Cockx (1891-1976) was an important pioneer of the avant-garde in Antwerp. He was a friend of Paul Van Ostaijen, Floris and Oscar Jespers, Paul Joosten, Michel Seuphor and Prosper De Troyer. During the interbellum he was a fixture on the Belgian art scene, both as a painter and as a ceramist.
