Jan Kagie lived and worked in The Hague, Rolde and Amsterdam. He was a student of his father but also formed himself (self-taught). He moved to Rolde (villa "De Wilte") in 1937 and to Amsterdam in 1949. During his time in Drenthe he came into contact with the Groningen art circle "De Ploeg", Hendrik Werkman and Gerrit Benner. Together with a number of painters from Drenthe (including Reinhart Dozy, Anton Heijboer and Bernard van Dulmen Krumpelman) he founded the association "De Drentse Schilders" in 1946.
He painted, drew and watercolored landscapes, still lifes and seascapes, initially in a realistic, later more in a figurative-expressionist style, abstracting his figures and objects in his own unique way.
