Hij woonde in Amsterdam waar hij in een klein atelier veelal Amsterdamse stadsgezichten en zeegezichten vervaardigde. Ook schilderde hij bloemstillevens, een bospad of een wintertje, afgewisseld door bv. bomschuiten op zee, Jan Kelderman was een autodidact en hij had een bijzonder schilderstalent in de impressionistische stijl.
