Beautiful etching by the Dutch artist Jan Montyn. Aquatint etching on laid paper, signed, dated (1971) and numbered (37/190) in pencil. In very good condition.
Dimensions: 65cm x 50cm (sheet), 48cm x 32cm (etching)
During World War II, Montyn became a member of the Jugendsturm. So we went to the training camp in Austria. He then enlisted in the Navy, where he experienced a shipwreck that he barely survived. After this disaster he was sent to the Eastern Front to serve in the trench warfare in Courland.
After the liberation he joined the Foreign Legion. He was trained in Algeria as a paratrooper to be used against Japan. After a short time he decided to flee. Back in the Netherlands, he was no longer accepted as a collaborator in his former circle and joined a Dutch army group in 1950 as a volunteer in the Korean War.
Back in the Netherlands, his German military service was considered compensated, but he still fell into a mental crisis. Writing down his experiences in detail got him back on his feet. Since then he has been engaged in painting and has become internationally known. He died in the summer of 2015 at the age of 90.
