De kunstenaar Jan Schonk staat bekend om zijn kunstwerken met landschappen, stillevens en dieren, met name vissen en vogels. Naast schilder en tekenaar was Schonk ook grafisch ontwerper en keramist. Hij studeerde aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunst en Technische Wetenschappen in Rotterdam. Na 1931 wijdde Schonk zich volledig aan de grafische kunst die vooral opvalt door zijn drang om massa’s, vlakken, lijnen en vormen tot ritmische akkoorden te componeren. Met zijn houtsnedes, litho’s en etsen is Schonk één van de belangrijkste grafische kunstenaars van de 20ste eeuw.
