The composition consists of a dense sequence of hand-drawn, black line forms distributed across the surface in a subtle, rhythmic pattern. Jan Schoonhoven (1914–1994) is one of the most important Dutch artists of the 20th century and was a central figure in the Zero movement, which was closely associated with the international ZERO group . Despite his international success, he worked as a civil servant in Delft until his retirement and often created his art in the evenings, using simple materials such as cardboard or papier-mâché.
