Jan Sierhuis (Amsterdam, December 21, 1928) is a Dutch painter.

Biography

Sierhuis grew up in the years of the depression. His father died when he was two. In his early childhood he already modeled and drew and on his ninth birthday he received a painting set. As a boy he often wandered through Amsterdam. He grew up with cityscapes such as those of Israels and Breitner. Although Sierhuis has traveled all over the world, he has always considered himself an Amsterdammer. He attended vocational school to become a house painter, through which he gained a lot of material knowledge.

Together with Appel, Corneille and Lucebert, he was at the center of post-war developments in art. In 1945 he was admitted to evening classes at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, which he left after a conflict. In 1947 he was involved with the Experimentals and in 1948 with the CoBrA group. However, he was too young to join it. Later he co-founded the Amsterdam artist group Groep Scorpio in 1962 with Frans de Boo, Roger Chailloux, John Grosman, Guillaume Lo A Njoe, Karl Pelgrom, Pierre van Soest, Aat Increase and Leo de Vries. "Angry Young Men", were those who wanted to approach exhibiting differently. The group was supported by Prof. Hans Jaffe.

Jan Sierhuis taught at Ateliers '63 in Haarlem in 1968 and from 1970 to 1979 was a supervisor at Psychopolis, the Free Academy in The Hague. In 1983 Sierhuis became a teacher at the Rietveld Academy and in 1984 at the Rijksakademie, an institute for practical study, both in Amsterdam.

Sierhuis received the Royal Subsidy for Painting for his work in 1956, in 1957 he received a medal from the Thérèse van Duyl-Schwartze portrait prize. In 1987 he was awarded the Jeanne Oosting Prize. He also received an honorable mention at the Prix de Rome. In 2002 he became Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.

Development of his work

Jan Sierhuis is primarily an expressionist painter, inspired by Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, van Gogh and Picasso, among others. In his younger years he painted naturalistic landscapes. In the fifties and sixties he worked almost exclusively abstract for some time. In the mid-sixties he switched from expressionism to a period with mainly human figures. Sierhuis switched to more figurative themes, such as dancing figures, portraits and landscapes. He spends many summers in Spain. [source?] His passion for flamenco influences many of his works and has led him to also work in three dimensions.
