Jan Siks (Rotterdam, 23 February 1885 - Zeist, 11 March 1938) was a Rotterdam painter, graphic artist and etcher. He was inspired by the old city centre of Rotterdam, the harbour and the hustle and bustle along the waterfront.
In 1915 he held his first exhibition in Utrecht.
Jan Sirks built up a respectable oeuvre. Although self-taught, he was a very good etcher, who was generally recognized. He was one of the few Rotterdammers who had a good existence in the art world at that time. He made cityscapes for the enthusiasts who wanted to have a painting of their hometown on their wall.
Jan Sirks painted, watercoloured, drew and etched the harbours of Rotterdam, tug horses, cityscapes and landscapes in a romantic realistic style. His work was distinguished by an original composition, atmospheric drawing, clever material expression and a firm grip on his objects. His romantic realistic style leaves enough to the imagination, so that his etchings remain exciting.
Jan Sirks was co-founder of the Rotterdam artist group "De Branding".
