This beautiful colorful work by Jan te Wierik almost jumps out of his frame! He used mixed techniques for the brightly colored - and for Te Wierik so characteristic - mythical creatures. The work is made on paper, and then professionally glued on board (by Lijstenmaker van Dijk from Enschede). The quick strokes and the contrasting background give the work depth and almost make the mythical creatures come to life.

This beautiful painting is a signature work of a unique artist. The work is framed in a black wooden frame with a gold-coloured edge. The work was purchased directly from Jan te Wierik by my parents in the late 1990s. In the last period of his life, my parents were good friends with him. I also had the opportunity to meet Jan several times in his house in Rekken. I remember Jan as a warm and super good natured passionate person. He died – much too young – at the age of 48 after a life in which passion was his motivation.

Te Wierik often uses various materials (mixed media): oil paint, acrylics, pigments and lacquer acrylic. He applies these materials - as in this work - with various techniques. The combination of materials and techniques creates special effects. The flexibility of the paint, the smoothness of the surface and the absence of limitations in the material give him a feeling of freedom. His work is characterized by bright, contrasting colors and hasty lines. The background is often calm. Most paintings show two figures. Sometimes these are clearly animal figures and sometimes a human figure can also be distinguished.
