Jan te Wierik (1954-2002) typically used various materials (mixed media) for a week: acrylics, pigments, and acrylic lacquer. The colors of his work are primary, the background is muted, and most paintings depict two figures. Sometimes these are clearly animal figures, and sometimes a human figure can be discerned. Whatever the case, human or animal, woman or man, bird or dog, what these figures share is an intense connection or, conversely, a poignant lack of connection. They are illustrations of combative creatures. His work, therefore, expresses oppression, hilarity, tragedy, love, and sorrow, but never resignation.
He rarely worked with a preconceived plan. The painter himself says the following about this: "I don't wait for inspiration. In my view, painting is a craft, and so, just like any other worker, I simply get to work in the morning."
