The representation of a Madonna and Child is a typical theme in the late period of Toorop's oeuvre. This watercolor, from 1926, comes from his Nijmegen period, in which Toorop maintained close contacts with prominent figures in the Jesuit order. His later work is therefore strongly religious in nature.
The work comes from a private collection.
