JAN TOOROP
The sacrifice

On the way to Maria
"The Sacrifice" is one of Jan Toorop's last works. This very broad, multicolored print, a combination of individual drawings, depicts Christians on their way to Mary. The drawings all have sacrifice as their central theme, illustrated by various figures. Jan Toorop chooses these figures from his immediate family, as well as from both religious and secular figures he encounters in his search for faith and values. Reproductions of (parts of) this artwork hung in many Catholic homes.

Depicted from left to right are:
Mary and Child looking towards two sisters who are making an offering
the English cardinal Henry Edward Manning (1808-1892) with Toorops' granddaughter Annie (Annetje) Fernhout below
Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) and Therese of Lisieux
Jan Toorop himself
Sister Agnes Westermann (1899-1961), the superior of the Women of Bethany
Valentinus Paquay (see below)
Sister Therèse Huf in front of the Reinilda House in Amsterdam, one of the houses of the Women of Bethany where from 1925 until the 1950s attempts were made to convert young people to Catholicism
Three singing girls, including his granddaughter Annetje, recognizable by her green dress
