Jan Wiegers was born on July 31, 1893 in Oldehove (Groningen prov.) and died on November 30, 1959 in Amsterdam. Wiegers trained as an artist at the Minerva Academy in Groningen and then in Rotterdam and The Hague. In 1918, he was co-founder of the Groningen artists' group “De Ploeg” with Jan Altink and Johan Dijkstra. For health reasons, he left for Davos, Switzerland, with his family in 1920. Here he met the Berlin Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Wiegers was influenced by his way of working and this is reflected in the brighter colors in his work.
