Janneke Brinkman-Salentijn is the wife of Eelco Brinkman and a well-known illustrator of, among other things, calendars with botanical subjects. Janneke Brinkman-Salentijn (1948) grew up in Emmeloord. She is a real outdoor child, she preferred to play in nature instead of doing her homework. Nevertheless, she obtained her HBS-B diploma and completed her studies in biology at the VU University in Amsterdam. It soon became clear that she took great pleasure in drawing very precisely and in detail, from the intestines of a guinea pig to the cross-section of a flower stem. For more than 25 years she has been passionately painting the exuberant colors and shapes of flowers and plants. She married Elco Brinkman in 1971 and had a son and two daughters with him. A few years after graduating in microbiology, she taught at a high school, specifically in nutrition in biology classes. For the time being, she then focused on raising the children, but she decided to take lessons at the Ars Aemula Naturae painting academy in Leiden and with Leny Noyen. Her passion for botanical watercolor painting got to her so much that she decided not to teach anymore. Her first exhibition, in 1987 in The Hague, and a request from a publisher to provide a calendar of her floral watercolors, accelerated her career.
