Jannes Kleiker (Grins, November 22, 1957) is a painter and sculptor who lives and works in Drachten. He has a studio in the Sluisfabryk.
Career
He studied at the Minerva Academy in Groningen (1978-1984, specializing in free drawing and sketching), where he was taught by artists including Matthijs Röling and Wout Muller. He is considered a member of the Northern Realists and was a member of the Prisma '88 artist group for a time. Later, he became one of the QuasiRealists, a group of artists from the three northern provinces founded in 2012.
Kleiker has painted figuratively from the very beginning, particularly female nudes, usually in a tranquil pose. Kleiker often paints from reality, but from around 1997 onwards he also places his figures in imaginative, exotic settings, such as Native American landscapes, rocky Mediterranean coasts (the cycle of La Nascita di Venere), and classical antiquity (reminiscent of some works by Laurens Alma-Tadema, whom Kleiker greatly admires). Also well-known are his 'Grottes Cycle' and 'Heveskes Cycle'. The empty church of Heveskes formed the backdrop of the latter, with great attention to the incidence of light. This was followed by the 'La Nascita di Venere Cycle', a tribute to all the Renaissance painters who painted the 'Birth of Venus'. Light—chiaroscuro—has become increasingly important in his work over the years.
Kleiker's work is held by the ING art collection, Museum Smellingerlân, the University of Groningen, private individuals, and the Museum Møhlmann, where he regularly exhibits his work with other independent realists.
