Jean Mauboulès was born on August 16, 1943, in Poey-de-Lescar in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. At the age of 19, he went to Paris, where he studied architecture and attended courses at the École des Beaux-Arts. Until 1966, Jean Mauboules's painting tended towards Surrealism. In the 1960s, he switched from painting to plastic design, working with glass. Since 1968, he has lived and worked in the canton of Solothurn and in Paris. Since the 1970s, he has created related thematic groups of collages, reliefs, sculptures, and objects. Glass, iron, and steel are the most common materials, but wood and stone are rarely used. In 1984, he exhibited at the Kunstmuseum in Bern, followed in 1986 by a retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Solothurn. In addition to Switzerland, he exhibits regularly in Germany, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, and the United States. In 1987 he won the Living Works Prize of the Canton of Solothurn, in 1996 the Art Prize of the Canton of Solothurn and in 1997 was appointed Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture.
