Dine successively attended the University of Cincinnati and the Boston School of Fine and Applied Arts and completed his studies in 1957 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ohio State University in Ohio. In the late fifties, Dine attracted attention with his participation in the so-called happenings in the Judson Gallery, founded with Claes Oldenburg and Allan Kaprow. He had his first solo exhibition in 1960 at the Reuben Gallery in New York. In 1962 he exhibited with, among others, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Dowd, Phillip Hefferton, Joe Goode, Edward Ruscha and Wayne Thiebaud at the groundbreaking exhibition New Painting of Common Objects at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena (California). This exhibition is considered the first pop art exhibition in the United States.
