Johan Hemkes ontwikkelde zich tot een begenadigd graficus en maakte zijn eerste ets toen hij 25 jaar oud was. In de twintigste eeuw liet hij Nederland zien via zijn etsen.
Als etser bestudeerde zij onderwerpen nauwkeurig. Of het nu architectuur, stadsgezichten, landschappen of planten waren, Hemkes maakt er in de ets een mooie compositie van waarin hij zijn liefde voor de plekjes die hij vastlegt in tekening en ets projecteert.
Vroege grote ets van deze Friese kunstenaar.
Hemkes is vooral bekend geworden met zijn voorstellingen van waterrijke landschappen.
Deze ets van een Fries meer is daar een goed voorbeeld van; een fantastisch sfeervol beeld van het Friese landschap.
De ets is in prima staat en daarbij fraai ingelijst in een bruinkleurig houten lijstje.
L.o. in de plaat gemonogrammeerd en gedateerd 1933.
Tevens in potlood gesigneerd en (in het Fries) getiteld.
