Johan Hemkes lived in Ter Apel from 1921 to 1966, where he was a drawing teacher at the Rijks HBS (now RSG Ter Apel). Throughout his life, he created numerous etchings of the surrounding landscape. Westerwolde was a favorite subject. Johan Hemkes possessed an excellent mastery of etching techniques. He consistently captured the atmosphere of the landscape through expressive lines and finely detailed work. In 1966, Hemkes moved to Bilthoven and devoted himself entirely to art. During these years, he significantly expanded his oeuvre. Etching dominated his daily life until he was very old. He died in 1988 in Bilthoven at the age of 94, leaving behind an impressive oeuvre.
