Johan Scherrewitz - Large canvas: Returning farmer

This work is by the Dutch painter Johan Frederik Cornelis Scherrewitz (Amsterdam 1868-1951 Hilversum). The canvas shows a farmer with two horses in the polder. The canvas is 70 x 100 cm (90 x 120 cm incl. frame), signed 'Scherrewitz' at the bottom right and in very good condition.
Scherrwitz was mainly influenced by the artists of the famous Hague School, the most important movement in his youth. Painters such as Jozef Israëls, Anton Mauve & Jacob Maris have left a deep impression on the young artist. Like the painters of the Hague School, Scherrewitz would mainly focus on the atmosphere of landscapes and the daily life of farmers. Whether fishermen on the beaches of the North Sea, sheep herders on the heath or farmers on horseback in the Dutch polders: he captured the essence of the Dutch landscape like no other.
