J.M. Graadt van Roggen behoorde tot de eerste kunstenaars die zich in Bergen (NH) vestigden. Vanhier heeft hij veel gereisd, en tekende en schilderde hij o.a. langs de Hollandse kust, in Bretagne en Zuid-Europa. Graadt van Roggen hield van de kust en de zee: zo verbleef hij vaak in Zeeland, waar hij schilderde in Zoutelande en Veere, en met bekende kunstenaars als Mondriaan, Hart Nibbrig en Jan en Charley Toorop deelnam aan zomertentoonstellingen die Jan Toorop in Domburg tussen 1911 en 1920 organiseerde. Graadt van Roggen verwierf vooral met zijn etsen grote (inter)nationale bekendheid. Tot 1908 maakte hij voornamelijk reproducerende etsen, naar schilderijen van bekende meesters als Van Ruysdael, J. Israels, J.H. Maris en J.H. Weissenbruch. Daarna etste hij naar eigen werk. Musea: o.a. Rijksprentenkabinet en Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Groninger museum. (Bron: Simonis en Buunk)
