John Henry Mohrmann - De zeeslag

Mohrmann was a sailor who managed to combine his maritime career with his artistic talent. This combination made him an important ship portraitist, a painter who painted portraits of actual ships on order from shipowners, captains, shipbuilders and maritime firms.
From 1884 to 1913 he lived and painted in Mohrmann in Antwerp. There Mohrmann received orders from captains and other maritime milieus.
At the end of 2013, a total of more than 470 of his works had been found. About 32 are family owned, more than 120 in various (maritime) museums, some owned by dealers and the rest privately owned. Such as in the Werder Collection (see www.fineartemporium.com) in Germany, in the collection of Prof. T. Siersdorfer in Essen (8 pieces) and at (former) shipping companies. In Belgium at the Compagnie Maritime Belge (13 pieces) and in Germany, among others at the Sloman-Neptune Schiffahrts AG in Bremen (5) and the former A. Kirsten Reederei in Hamburg. His paintings are still regularly offered at auctions, especially in Germany and Belgium. Naturally, Mohrmann's painstaking paintings are of inestimable maritime-historical value. His paintings are still fetching high prices at recent auctions.
