John Rädecker is best known for his contribution to the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam, where he asked Adriaan Roland Holst as a lyricist. Due to his death, he was not able to finish everything. His sons Han and Jan Willem Rädecker did that. He died on the day when the "Mary and the Child" statue was placed.
He was educated at the Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam and also an evening course at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. His breakthrough came in 1910, when he made a number of luminist paintings. He moved to Paris for a few years (1911-1914).
After the First World War, his work became innovative. His sculptures were given human and animal figures in a style that was still unknown.
After Paris he went to live in Mons where he was part of De Nieuwe Kring, a group of visual artists and writers with a strong community ideal that was opposed to advancing technology.
In 1926 artists' association 'De Brug' was founded, of which Rädecker, Charley Toorop, Dick Ket and Johan Polet were members at the beginning. In the 1920s and 1930s Rädecker was seen as the most important Dutch sculptor. He is considered part of the Amsterdam School. His style is related to the Bergen School.
