Jonas Burgert, one of the most exciting contemporary figuration artists, was born in 1969 in West Berlin. In 1991 he began his studies at the University of the Arts there, which he successfully completed in 1996 (MA). The talented young painter then became a master student with Dieter Hacker. In the large-format paintings by Jonas Burgert, the grotesque, bizarre and surreal prevail. Nightmarish figures, even zombies, invade his pictorial spaces, just as the garish colors spin the gloomy night gray. Whole worlds unfold in this way, frightening and attractive at the same time. Jonas Burgert shows himself to be a talented narrator and paints complex stories like something out of a creepy science fiction novel. Since the mid-2000s, Jonas Burgert has developed more and more into a real shooting star of the new figuration. The Hamburg contemporary gallery "discovers" the artist, showing his works in 2005 alongside the works of the world-famous Neo Rauch. They don't need to shy away from this comparison, and so the exhibition means nothing less than a breakthrough for Jonas Burgert. Since then, the international art market has been scrambling for his works, and the demand can hardly be met. Even the renowned Saatchi Gallery in London bought the Berlin artist's paintings. Jonas Burgert has long had solo exhibitions in museums, most recently the shows "Schutt und Futter" in the Kestner Society in Hanover (2013) and "Lebendversuch" in the Kunsthalle Krems and the Kunsthalle Tübingen (2010/11).
