Gomes creëert mens- en dierfiguren. Zijn werk kenmerkt zich door een figuratieve, krachtige expressiviteit waarin het gebaar en de emotie worden gevangen in ruimtelijke vormen. Klein of monumentaal, zijn beelden hebben een enorme zeggingskracht. Karel Gomes rangschikt zichzelf niet onder een bepaalde kunststroming, maar werkt vooral vanuit zijn sociale bevlogenheid.
Werk van hem werd aangekocht door grote musea zoals het Rijksmuseum en het Centraal Museum in Utrecht, en door gemeenten en particulieren in binnen- en buitenland. Een bekend beeld van zijn hand is het Gandhi-monument aan de Amsterdamse Churchilllaan.
