The composition shows a large companion figure holding two smaller figures in its arms – a powerful, emotional image that embodies themes such as protection, care and vulnerability.

This 2016 proof was created as a design study or test print for a series of canvas bags produced during the same period.

Between 2015 and 2017, KAWS developed a series of works in which Companion appears as a parental or supporting figure—usually in warm brown, gray, and beige tones with a melancholic mood. During this period, the artist transferred his iconic figures to various media, including prints, 3D plastic sculptures, books, canvas, and textiles.

KAWS (Brian Donnelly, born 1974 in Jersey City, USA) is one of the most influential contemporary artists of his generation. He began as a graffiti artist in New York and developed a distinctive visual language that blends Pop Art, Street Art, and contemporary sculpture. His figures—including Companion, BFF, and Chum—are known worldwide and symbolize universal themes such as loneliness, empathy, and connection.
