Cornelis Bernardus van Bohemen (The Hague, September 27, 1928 - ibid., September 22, 1985) was a Dutch painter.
Kees van Bohemen studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in the 1940s. At the age of twenty-four he received a grant with which he travelled to Paris. He stayed there for five years with breaks in between and became friends with several painters from the Cobra group. He shared a studio with Corneille until 1957.
He joined the Dutch Informal Group in the late 1950s. Other members of this group were Armando, Jan Schoonhoven and Jan Henderikse. Afterwards he was indirectly involved in the Dutch Nul movement; he maintained personal contacts with its members. He was also a member of the Posthoorn Group, Pulchri Studio and the Hague Art Circle. In 1954 he became a member of the Sint Lucas association in Amsterdam
Van Bohemen visited several European countries and travelled to the United States and Africa (1972). He made large colourful canvases of women, sportsmen and exotic motifs. The expressive handling of paint was his priority; he explicitly did not want to tell a story with his paintings.[1]
His work can be found in the collections of, among others, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Kunstmuseum The Hague and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
Kees van Bohemen was the brother of the Hague painting restorer Nico van Bohemen and father of actor Casper van Bohemen.
