Particularly heavy wooden sculpture by artist Kiek Bak. Round shapes chopped and refined in a hard type of wood. Stands on a marble base. Image weighs 23 kg.
Marinus Wilhelmus Cornelis (Kiek) Bak ('s-Hertogenbosch, December 24, 1930 – Amsterdam, April 5, 1998) was a Dutch sculptor. Bak studied with Jaap Kaas at the Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam. He worked in Den Bosch, Rotterdam and from 1960 in Amsterdam. In 1968 Bak exhibited with Adriaan Engelman at Pictura in Groningen. In response to this, art critic Rommert Boonstra wrote: "Bak is a sculptor of the old (solid) stamp. His smoothly finished sculptures of wood, bronze and stone reveal a preference for 'beautiful' materials and great craftsmanship. Bak's subject is older than the road to Rome: the woman – or rather: the feminine, because it is not always easy to construct a real lady from the swellings and curves he strings together; but she is always present in the spirit." He was a member of the Dutch Circle of Sculptors.
