Koos van der Sluys was born in Utrecht in 1920. He died in Utrecht in 2005. Van der Sluys was a graphic artist and designer, trained at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten (National Academy of Fine Arts) in Amsterdam. After completing this training in 1945, he joined the Westraven pottery factory in Utrecht. There, he was appointed head and designer of the relief tile department. One of the tiles he introduced was the chanoir tile: a tile with a plain, often white background featuring a stylized figure in a contrasting color, often black. As a graphic artist, he achieved particular fame with his portfolio for the Livre de Jade, in which he successfully integrated text and image into a unified whole.
