Leendert (Leo) Gestel was born in Woerden on November 22, 1881. He received his first drawing lessons from his father Willem Gestel, who was a house painter and director of the Woerden Evening Drawing School. His father, however, did not like an uncertain life as an artist, but in 1904 Leo started as an artist in an attic in the Tweede Jan Steenstraat in Amsterdam. Gestel's friends called Leendert Leonardo, after Leonardo da Vinci, abbreviated Leo. Gestel continued to use this name throughout his life. Leo Gestel is seen as one of the Netherlands' most important modernists. Shortly after his sixtieth birthday, on November 26, 1941, Leo Gestel died in Hilversum.
