Information about the artist:
Ludovicus ('Lou') Roelandus Marie Ten Bosch (21 May 1923 (Rotterdam-Kralingen) – 05 January 2018 (Warnsveld)) was a Dutch visual artist and puppeteer.
-Education: He graduated in 1945 from the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam.
After following a mime course with Rob van Houten, he settled in Dordrecht where he was active as a visual artist, and also gave pantomime performances. Through his wife Ank Stumpel, assistant to puppeteer Henk Zoutendijk, he came into contact with puppetry and with puppeteer Jan de Nijs. With De Nijs he made his first puppet shows with which they gave performances for children from the mid-1950s.
At the end of the sixties, Lou Ten Bosch and Albert Winsemius, now both art teachers at the Pedagogical Academy in Dordrecht, Tejater Oei, developed a "Figure Theater". The source of inspiration was the puppet theater as it could be seen in Prague (the Black Theatre). In these theater performances, the illusion was created that objects were floating in space by means of black backgrounds and artists dressed completely in black.
In his puppetry, Ten Bosch mainly played with hand puppets, which he made himself. Typical of his playing is that he tried to integrate theater and visual arts, and that he made extensive use of improvisation.
-Lou Ten Bosch was a member of the artists' association Teekengenootschap Pictura (Dordrecht).
