Frenchman Louis Favre (1892-1956) possessed all the makings of a memorable artist. Around 1920, he worked with well-known contemporaries in Paris. His work was purchased early on by Gertrude Stein and exported to the US. Until his death, he maintained contact with well-known artist friends, including Lipchitz. Favre began painting but switched to lithographs around 1940. This brought him to the attention of the general public, particularly through his use of color. His work was exhibited in all the major museums and galleries in Europe. In Berlin, the edition of his 13-color lithograph sold out in no time. In 1947, he moved to The Hague to work at Mouton & Co., where he produced commissioned lithographs. Unfortunately, much of his work was lost due to two major fires. In 1954, Favre successfully represented France at the Venice Biennale. If Louis Favre had been alive today and had been effectively marketed, he would certainly not have been forgotten. In short, this artist deserves attention. And what's special is that his work is now being exhibited in the city where he lived and worked more than 70 years ago (at 103 Van Hogendorpstraat).
