Maartje Wijngaarden is een laatbloeier in de kunst. Pas na haar 35ste ontwikkelde zij zich tot professioneel beeldend kunstenaar. Aanvankelijk schilderde ze vrij traditionele landschappen en stillevens in neo-impressionistische stijl. Geleidelijk aan ontwikkelde ze een eigen handschrift met als hoofdthema haar visie op de natuur en hoe zij begaan is met mens en dier. In haar recente werken zijn vrijwel altijd dieren afgebeeld. Soms schildert ze ook taferelen over de relatie tussen mens en dier. Haar vormen zijn altijd geabstraheerd en hebben dikwijls zware contouren. Het meest opvallende is het gewaagde en vaak felle kleurgebruik.
