MAARTJE WIJNGAARDEN, born 1947 in 't Zand (a village in the municipality of Schagen, North Holland), painter and screen printer.
Maartje Wijngaarden is a late bloomer in art. It was not until she was 35 that she developed into a professional visual artist. Initially she painted fairly traditional landscapes and still lifes in a Neo-Impressionist style.
Gradually she developed her own handwriting with the main theme being her vision of nature and how she cares about people and animals. Animals are almost always depicted in her recent works. Sometimes she also paints scenes about the relationship between humans and animals. Her forms are always abstract and often have heavy contours. The most striking is the bold and often bright use of color.
