Maggi Giles (Newquai, England, 1938)
The English artist Maggi Giles came to the Netherlands in 1965. A year later she started working in the 'Building Ceramics' department of the pottery factory 'De Porceleyne Fles' in Delft. At the 'Porceleyne Fles', Maggi Giles soon came into contact with Karel Appel, for whom she carried out the monumental design for the Congress Building in The Hague. It is Karel Appel who draws the attention of director De Wilde of the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum to her work. He puts it this way: "She makes toys for grown-ups from ceramique..." In 1970 she had her first solo exhibition at the Stedelijk.
Four years later, Maggi Giles started working as an independent ceramist in a studio on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam. The new environment inspires her to make 'canal houses', 'gates', 'towers' and 'castles'. All her work is done in bright colours. To this end she developed a technique, which she still uses, in which she can put all desired colors directly next to each other. She erects clay dams between the surfaces, which later work like the black lines of stained glass. With her lively use of color she has always distinguished herself from other ceramists in the Netherlands.
