Tussen 1927 en 1930 realiseerde Marc Chagall deze reeks illustraties in opdracht van Ambroise Vollard. Deze reeks werd in 1930 gemaakt maar pas uitgegeven in 1952 door Tériade Editeurs in Parijs.
In totaal werden er 200 portfolio’s uitgegeven waarvan 40 exemplaren op « Japon nacré » papier.
