Erich Nusser was the hotel manager of the Baur au Lac. The hotel, originally a guesthouse, quickly became a must-see destination. The Austrian Empress Elisabeth, the Russian Tsarina, the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, and countless princes, counts, and barons stayed at the BAUR AU LAC. Artists were drawn to Zurich's young elite, particularly the wife of railway magnate Alfred Escher. Legend has it that composer Richard Wagner premiered the first act of his opera Die Walküre at the BAUR AU LAC, performing it himself, accompanied on the piano by his father-in-law, Franz Liszt. Since then, the world's most famous musicians have stayed there, from Arthur Rubinstein to Plácido Domingo and Zubin Mehta. The visual arts were also represented, with luminaries such as Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, and Henry Moore.

Marc Chagall (1887–1985) – Master of Modern Art – was a Russian-French artist renowned for his expressive colors and dreamlike compositions that blend reality and fantasy. His work explores themes of love, folklore, and spirituality, and includes paintings, stained glass windows, and prints. Chagall was a pioneer of Modernism, combining influences from Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism. Deeply rooted in Jewish folklore and the Russian avant-garde, his art is admired worldwide and exhibited in prestigious institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Centre Pompidou, and the Tate Modern. A rare and valuable collector's item for lovers of Chagall's timeless and poetic visual language.
